Mow Cop colliery has quite a history, however much of this to me is a mystery. Before I begin my ramblings I am asking if anyone knows about the colliery then please let me know.

The mine was located just off Church Lane along the route of the Towerhill Tramway. The Footrill was started in 1869 and was owned by Viggars & Co. By 1896 it had been taken over by A. Booth & Co and was called the Bullhurst Workings (see maps). How long they owned or worked the mine I do not know but according the OS map of 1897/8 it had been abandoned.
By 1900 E Hancock of Harriseahead is shown to be the owner and by 1910 is the Bullhurst,Winpenny Mines. Again by 1917 it is known as Woodhead and according to the map and locally gathered info was also used to mine fire clay
