On Saturday 22nd May 1965 Mr. Jimmy Saville opened the £7000 Mow Cop, Mount Pleasant and Bank’s new Village Hall. It was estimated that during the day 1500 people turned up to see Mr Saville. Jimmy was one of the most popular disc jockeys of the day and turned up in a red sports car, wearing a black and white mandarin outfit. During the ceremonies Mr Saville donated 100 records to the village hall for the benefit of the teenagers. There was no formality to the occasion, but there were plenty of activities to those interested. The children had races and a fancy dress competition, and there was 5 a side football with no fewer than 29 teams entered. In the evening, local wrestler Bill Ogden, who was also a close friend of Mr Saville's organised wrestling bouts in the marquee. The most popular bout was a tag team effort with Bill Ogden teaming up with George Goldie to fight John Hall and Jack Santos, the later being the winners.
