37152 Gunner Ernest Bailey

37152 Gunner Ernest Bailey was born in 1886 in Odd Rode, he was christened on the 7th March 1886 in All Saints Church, Odd Rode, he was one of 4 children to John and Sarah Bailey of Rode Hall, Scholar Green. Ernest married Sarah Jane Lowndes in 1902 in Macclesfield. In 1911 Ernest and Sarah lived at 36 Green Street, Macclesfield, his occupation was a Cotton Weaver and his wife Sarah’s occupation was a Shirt machinist, on the 1911 census it states they had no children.

 

There are no surviving service records for Ernest; all we know is that he enlisted in Cheshire in 1915 and that he went to France on the 15th July 1915, he was killed on the 23rd April 1917 age 31 years, he is buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, Northern France. You can see from the Medal Index card below, Ernest’s medals were sent to his wife at “The Moss Cottage”, Scholar Green in 1920.
