29117 Private Mark Ball

29117 Private Mark Ball was born in 1896 in Tunstall, Mark was one of 7 children to Isaac and Sarah Ann Ball (nee Harris) they lived at 19 Back Street, Rookery, Stoke-on-Trent. Mark worked with his father & brothers in the Rookery Colliery Company, Kidsgrove until war broke out, he was unmarried.

 

Mark enlisted in Macclesfield after 1916, there are no surviving service records for him, but from his Medal Index Card we can see when he first enlisted he was given the Regimental number 3648 and then he was given a new number 291117 in the Cheshire Regiment. Mark was killed on the 4th September 1918; he is buried on Pond Farm Cemetery, Belgium. Mark was killed 14 days before his older brother Enoch.
