Killer
Mile 2005 |
|
|
|
|
|
Thursday 28th April 2005 , the most anticipated
or dreaded day of the year was upon us. THE KILLER MILE.
This 1 mile race which over the years had attracted 1000's of runners was
once more up and running. But would it be the success it once was? Were the
MCRA flogging a dead horse? Only on the night would we know.
The evening for the many stewards started at 5:30 meeting at the Mow Cop Community
Church with clear instructions and a well prepared plan. Nerves were tingling
or was it cramp from walking the course previously?? |

With
fluorescent jackets pens and paper they ventured out for the first task of the
evening, the group photo. With thanks to so few from so many for an excellent
night.
Des, Simon, Graham, Wallace,Gib, Pat, Julie, Mark, Paul, John, Dave, Steve,
Andy P, Andy H, Sandra to name just a few. |

The night was looking promising, we had
Den Siegertsz from Radio Stoke to start the first race at 6:30 and a fine
job he did.
With help of Wallace (Postie) the Children
lined up, we thought we could start a little early but more and more kept
registering and filling the ranks till we had 79 under 13's (some with Mums
and Dads. |

Now
the plan was the Den would jump in the lead car (cheers Dave Harvey) as soon
as the pistol was fired, then with yours truly and 2 Busty Blondes (Dave's wife'
words not mine) would race to the top, maybe overtake the Police Escort Van
and capture the winners with a photo, well that was the plan.
The door was open, the pistol ready, Bang
unfortunately for Den the Children went a little quicker than anticipated and
swamped us completely, so we had to follow the the rear as it were. The children
all ran extremely well with a race that was not quite as long as the adults,
it was decided that the 1:4 by the Cheshire View was too cruel. So the children
stopped at the Pub , a great decision thought many parents . |

Joseph
Myatt was the proud winner on the night with a time of 6.59, it takes me longer
than that to walk down. Radio Stoke took a special interest in the children's
race and the following day interviewed Joseph live at school. We all heard from
Joseph how his mum forced him to run, and that she didn't do much running herself
(apart from winning the Stoke Marathon and taking part in many other races). |

The night continued with the same enthusiasm
and the following 5 race all went well.
The second race was the one that would bring the fastest time "The
Club Runners Race" to start prompt at 6:50, 50 runners in all. Number
93 Chris Heys was the winner with an impressive 7:03, the fastest lady was
number 74 Joanne Moore 11:15

I would just like to congratulate all
of you at the Mow Cop Residents Association on the superb job that you all
did in resurrecting the Killer Mile Race. I am sure there was a lot
of effort went in to organising the event, and on the day I hope this was
rewarded for you with all competitors and spectators clearly enjoying the
occasion. The memorabilia and programmes for sale added something
extra. I am sure that the event will grow year on year as word spreads
far and wide of its reputation. As an employee of ICL (now Fujitsu), the company
that founded the race in the early 1980s, this was my first chance to take
part as I joined the company just after the last official Killer Mile had
taken place in 2000. Some of my colleagues who were involved in those
early days were present, and all were delighted that it had been resurrected
so well and with such enthusiasm. I am 29 years old and have been training
with Sale Harriers for 10 years. I favour fell running, which is what I think
gave me the edge on the night over some road runners who perhaps went off
a bit too fast! This is the first race I have ever won and I will treasure
the winner's plate and trophy for many years to come. Thanks again to everyone
at Mow Cop Residents Association. I hope to be back next year to defend
my title! Chris Heys |
