Killer Mile 2006

Thursday 27th April 2006 will be yet another day etched in our minds, as once again Mow Cop holds one of the greatest sporting events of our time (at least we think so) "The Killer Mile " Would this year be as successful as last and would it live up to the classic race of the eighties. Well in a word Yes. The first and one of the most enjoyable races was the Children's race anyone under the age of 13 and some with Mum and Dad in tow (literally) started at 6:30pm. This year we had a few junior club runners which was evident by the professional looking tops and sunglasses. The race for health and safety reasons for the children and the following runners stops at the "Cheshire View " which is a great place for Mum and Dad to wait pint in hand.

This years first three were
Jack Nixon 6:08
Jake Cleavely 6:14
Charlie Highgate 6:33
First Girl
Lindsey Peel 7:30
Louise Davenhill 8:02
Bethany Harris 8:10

Is he going to be sick?

Congleton Harriers with their leading lady

The next race is the one where the records are usually made, but not always.
The Club Runners this started at 6:50 and would be the race to give us the fastest male Steve Vernon (Stockport Harriers) with an impressive 6:18 just 6 seconds slower than the record set by Bashir Hussain. It was a well run race and as we would expect some pretty overall impressive times

Steve Vernon 6:18
Daniel Meigh 6:50 (picture required please)
Mike Proudlove 7:01

And the Ladies
Debbie Hill 10:36
Elizabeth Brittain 11:34
Holly Taylor 11:35

An interesting story cropped up as I was talking to the athletes, number 252 Matt Plummer from the Congleton Harriers
had a serious RTA several years ago and shattered his pelvis and was left with head injuries in a coma. Matt was told he would never walk again. He defied the doctors and his own injuries and ran the London Millennium marathon in an impressive 4:46.
Well done Matt.

The veterans were to be next starting at 7:10pm. This race always impresses me, I am still to young for this category and feel worn out just watching, my hat goes of to them all. Especially 62 year old Derek Dale from Congleton who 10 months ago had a heart by-pass operation and completed the race in an impressive 12:10, looking forward to seeing you smash your record next year Derek.

Bashir Hussain 7:31 (5th best overall time on the night )
Stewart Parrott 8:05
Mark Flint 8:08

And the Ladies
Anne Roberts 10:57

Next to go is the teens and I wont start with a bunch of tired cliches about how good it is to see teens doing something constructive etc etc, But IT IS, and well done to all who took part. Again the younger club runners took the top positions however all did well even Mow Cop's very own Fab Four
Ben, Jacob, Dan and Steven.

Andrew Nixon 7:02 (6th best overall time on the night )
