James William Skellern - Not on the WW1 Memorial but is mentioned on his parents grave in the Church Yard.

 

Pte. James William Skellern (2211) 2nd Battalion, 6th Reinforcements,

Australian Army.

Born: 24th March 1888, Mow Cop.

Son of: John & Marie Skellern of Crewe

Residence: Crewe

Occupation: Railway Stores Accountant.

Enlisted: Sidney, Australia.

Embarkation details: Unit sailed from Sidney, New South Wales on the 16th June 1915, the ship was the HMAT  Karoola for Gallipoli, Turkey.

Killed: Sunday 7th August 1915, Gallipoli, Turkey age 27 years.

Buried: No grave – Commemorated on Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey.

                                                               

James’s father, John Skellern was born in Newchapel, his mother, Maria Lawton was born in Mow Cop they married in 1879 in All Saints, Odd Rode. In 1901 the family lived in Crewe, Cheshire.

At the age of 23 James emigrated to Australia. On his Australian service records it stated: Born March 24th 1888. Had ordinary day school education, and won a scholarship for a three-year course at a Secondary school. Became a clerk in the service of the L.N.W Rly Co, Crewe, England. In his leisure studied, he succeeded in gaining a pupil teacher certificate. Decided to try his fortune in Australia and emigrated alone.

James worked for the New South Wales Government Railway & Tramways, N.S.W.

He was mortally wounded at Lone Pine, Suvla Bay Landing & was buried at sea.
